April 2024 Report

Submitted by Jill Vidas, UCI CUCRA Representative

Activities & Programs:

The UCIRA continues to work closely with our UCI Center for Emeriti & Retirees (CER) on all programming and activities. Our board president regularly attends UCIEA Executive Committee meetings.

The annual Chancellor’s Reception honoring UCI Emeriti and Retirees took place on October 16. Chancellor Gillman presided over the reception which was both in-person and live streamed.

Online Zoom and Webinar sessions (Medicare, Fidelity workshops) along with monthly in- person walks, hikes, and bike rides continue. Sessions included a Mindfulness workshop in October and promoting AROHE’s three-part series Reimaging Retirement seminar with Fidelity.

UCI retirees participated in the annual UCI Anti-Cancer Challenge (walk, run, or bike) in October which benefits cancer research at the Chao Cancer Resource Center.

Also in October, UCI retirees participated in the Multiple Sclerosis Bike Ride (ride from 25 to 150 miles) which was a fundraiser for the National MS Society.

Pickle Ball for retirees took place in October at the Anteater Recreation Center (ARC).

A golf outing was held at the Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in November.

UCIRA also hosted a cooking class via Zoom in March.

In April, a “no cost” trip to the Langson Institute and Museum of California Art in Irvine is planned.

New Programs and Partnerships:

Retirees and Alumni from 1966-1974 are eligible to join the Golden Anteater Society. During UCI Homecoming in March, retirees and alumni who have 50 or more years with UCI were inducted into the Golden Anteater Society.

Also in March Dr. Megan Witbracht discussed Alzheimer’s disease and healthy brain aging. In April Professor Louis DeSipio is giving a lecture on the 2024 Elections.

The list of perks available for UCI retirees continues: library access, newspaper access, department discounts and no cost on-campus parking for a day pass (available for RA members). All UCI retirees continue to have 50% discounted parking for monthly passes and are eligible to keep their UCI email.

Volunteering and Giving Back

We continue to volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank.

The UCIRA Legacy Scholarships are being increased. We will award two incoming freshmen scholarships ($4000 and $3000 each) and two transfer student scholarships ($4000 and $3000) each beginning fall 2024.
