UC Santa Barbara Retirees' Association

April 2025 Report

Submitted by Kim Summerfield, CUCRA Representative

Membership (including recruitment efforts and marketing).

Our Annual Membership Fee is $15, and membership is now standing at 415, so our membership has recovered to pre-pandemic levels - good news indeed.

We advertise our events through e-blasts from our Center Coordinator, word of mouth and direct e-mails.  We hope to expand the range of programs and discounted activities offered in future to encourage more retirees who are not yet members to come along and sign up.

 Member Benefits (parking, discounts, etc.)

Membership benefits include free parking on campus, access to the university library, discounted use of the Recreational Center, as well as discounts at the UCSB Bookstore and discounted tickets for some off-campus activities.  Additionally, the Association continues to offer two $1000 scholarships for needy/local students enrolled at UCSB.

 Organizational Developments (staffing, retirement center)

We continue to have some open positions on our board, but happily we welcomed a new President in Kim Summerfield last year as well as a new Membership Coordinator (Julie Luera) and CUCRA Rep (George Hopwood).  We also welcomed the reclassification of our Center Coordinator’s 50% time position to a higher level.

We still don’t have assigned space for a true Retirement Center at UCSB, just a cubicle for our Center Coordinator, however we have access to a room designated as the “Retiree/Emeriti Meeting Room”, and we are hopeful that additional space might be made available in the future.

Association’s Activities (picnics, luncheons, lectures, etc.)

Chancellor Yang (who is retiring himself in June this year) again sponsored a Reception for new retirees and emeriti last October, and we had a healthy turnout of recently retired staff and faculty.  Many attendees expressed interest in the joining the association and participating in our activities, especially the Travel Program.

In December we held our annual holiday party and toy drive at a local golf club with a fabulous turn-out, and we raised money with a raffle of some great prizes donated by local restaurants and stores including two huge gift baskets of local products. Upcoming events include a Genealogy workshop, a tour of a local museum called the Hermitage and our annual summer picnic in June.
