UC Santa Barbara Retirement Association Report

October 2023 Report

Submitted by Kim Summerfield, CUCRA Representative

Membership
Our membership has held steady at 385. There will be a Chancellor's Reception for new retirees in November where we hope to recruit not just new members, but possible board members.

Association's activities
Because our leadership board has been in flux, we have not done as much programming as we would like to have had. We are also experiencing a tremendous amount of travel by board members now that Covid has eased up. Because of that, board members have been less available to plan or attend events.

In April we had a terrific, sold out turnout for a lavender farm tour and olive oil tasting in the Santa Ynez valley.

In June a small number of members visited the Los Angeles Natural History Museum. We had hoped to be able to fill a small bus for the trip, but found the interest was low and had to cancel the bus. However, carpools were arranged for those still wanting to go.

We have held several no-host dinners at a local restaurant. Turnouts were small.

Status of the UCSB Retirement Center/Task Force
The Chancellor's Retiree and Emeriti Task Force has completed its work. While it was successful in increasing the FTE to 100% for our Retiree/Emeriti Center Coordinator, a higher classification to match those at similar campuses was denied. A request for confidential offices (our current retiree assistant uses a cubicle) and meeting space was made, but received no response. Having a proper and confidential space will remain a priority issue for the retiree association.
