The UCSF Retirees Association has been very active in 2025-26 (10/25 – 3/26). We have begun exploring our legacy goals, with an eye toward initiatives and programs that will have lasting value and guide our growth. One of our most important goals related to legacy has been to establish a more robust Retirees Center unit within the UCSF campus hierarchy, as most other campus retirees’ associations currently have. Historically, we have had modest campus support, including shared assistance from an Alumni Association staff member. This help has been invaluable, and we are seeking to expand it. Accordingly, we developed a formal proposal to establish a unit within the campus organizational hierarchy, including a recommendation for 3 FTEs to support our activities. The modest level of additional support proposed remains substantially less than that of other campuses with similar retiree cohorts. The proposal was well received; unfortunately, budget constraints have led to it being tabled until campus finances stabilize.
Using existing staff and volunteer support, we have undertaken the following:
CUCRA/CUCEA. UCSF continues to be active within the systemwide organizations. In addition to our representative and alternate, we continued to participate actively on the Joint Benefits Committee. Also, UCSF was honored to host the October 2025 CUCRA/CUCEA Conference last fall. The event was highlighted by Chancellor Sam Hawgood's presentation on current ongoing initiatives, including continued leadership in clinical medicine and research innovation, as well as the Mission Bay cutting-edge Cancer Center and Life Sciences Incubator. A video showcasing UCSF's recent projects was also shared.
New Retirees' Reception. On October 8, 2025, we welcomed 80 participants to one of our most important annual events, which represented a 20% increase in attendance over the previous year. UCSFRA's Board works as ambassadors for our Association, emphasizing the importance of continuing to engage with the university after retirement. Various organizations were invited to participate, representing investment management, volunteer organizations, fitness opportunities, and travel, among others. Speakers included representatives from the Emeriti Faculty Association, the Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning, and the Executive Director of UCSF Alumni Relations. This annual event, conceived and sponsored by UCSFRA, is one of our most popular and has continued to increase our visibility on campus.
Membership. UCSFRA membership continues to grow, with approximately 4,200 individuals on our mailing list and over 500 paid memberships. A key goal is to increase formal membership. The Membership Analysis Committee is seeking to further engage members through plans for electronic payments and surveys. The Committee is also exploring initiatives to increase campus presence and involvement and has met with HR to learn more about retirement processes. We have an active and growing social media presence on Facebook, with followers more than doubling over the last six months.
Board Development. Over the last few years, we have worked to strengthen and develop our Board. A strong Board is key to accomplishing our priorities and initiatives. Additional At-Large board members have been added, and we seek to encourage a healthy mix of experience and 2 fresh perspectives. The Legacy Committee has developed an onboarding document that outlines our organization's goals and the Board members' responsibilities.
Programs and Activities. Our programs, excursions, lectures, and luncheons have been frequent and diverse over the last six months. A sampling is listed below.
