Lawrence Berkeley

October 2024 Report

Submitted by Nancy Brown, Ex-Ls CUCRA representative

Membership: Our in-person activities, although limited, have begun to increase as noted below and some present opportunities to increase our membership. The EX-Ls appreciate the generous financial support from the CUCRA travel program that will help support these efforts.

Concerns: While we are anxious to resume in-person meetings, we will continue Zoom talks for those not able to attend in person. It is, however, very important for the Ex-Ls to begin meeting in person to enable members to chat with people that they know and to meet others who worked at the lab.  Having live events will also facilitate filling the Ex-Ls leadership positions.

Activities: The Ex-Ls participated in a Happy Hour at the Cornerstone Brewery in May organized by the University of California Berkeley Retirement Center (UCBRC).

The UC Retirees picnic was held on July 10 and a number of Ex-Ls attended. The Ex-Ls organized a tour of the LBNL Advanced Light Source, that occurred on July 29.  The tour was very popular, and was “maxed-out” by retirees from LBNL and UCB. In response to the high demand, a second tour will be organized and conducted this fall. The Ex-Ls continued our quarterly speaker series on Zoom. Michael Wehner presented a talk “A New Approach to Climate Modeling” that focused on the impact of superstorms-a very timely topic.

Retirement Center Interactions:  UCBRC moved to their new office space in the Banway Building at 2111 Bancroft Way and hosted an open house for Berkeley Retirees on September 27. LBNL has renewed its contract with UCBRC until 2027. We continue to be grateful for the considerable support that Cary Sweeny and Camille Koue continue to provide us from the Berkeley Retirement Center.  We greatly appreciate the various lectures that are presented by the Center.
